“The Emperor’s New Clothes” is a kids’ story by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. It’s about a vain emperor who is convinced to wear a suit of invisible clothes by weavers that claim the suit is only visible to the wise and intelligent. The emperor parades around naked, but everyone pretends to see the clothes. That is, until a child speaks up and points out the emperor is actually naked. The story is a commentary on the dangers of vanity, conformity, and the importance of speaking truth to power.

A sitting President suffering from cognitive disabilities can be contrasted with this story. The President, like the emperor, holds a position of power and importance. Heck, he holds the nuclear keys… However, his cognitive decline is not a deliberate choice, but rather a matter of health.

The story highlights the importance of speaking up when someone is not acting in their best interests (or the best interests of the country), and this is just as relevant in the case of a President with cognitive decline. However, unlike the story, the situation is not as simple as pointing out that the emperor is naked. Addressing the President’s cognitive decline requires sensitivity, tact, and respect for the office they hold.

Should Joe Biden be removed by the 25th Amendment? Should he be required by Congress or the Cabinet to pass a cognitive skills test?
